How many days do you need when you’re wanting to travel in Botswana?
First time in Botswana?
Many people intend to cover all areas in a few days which normally doesn’t give them enough time to explore more of these different unique wildlife areas. People think they will see more if they run through all areas in a few days but the fact is, that each area is so different and diverse on its own and you need at least 2 or more days in each area. To cover most of Botswana’s active wildlife areas you need a minimum of 8 or 10 days, this will give you a good 2 nights in each area from Chobe Riverfront, Savuti, Khwai, and Moremi Game Reserve/Okavango Delta. Remember those are minimum days some travelers will do 14 to 20 days or even more so that you cover most of Botswana Game Reserves and National Parks. If you don’t have as much time off or can’t afford to stay for as long, chat to a tour agent or your mobile camping company to get their personal opinion and feedback. They have the experience in those areas to guide you the best they can for you to get the most out of your trip.
Coming back for seconds!
It is a little easier for repeat travelers because you will have an idea of which best area to spend most of your days looking at your interests. Repeat travelers intend to stay more days in their favorite wildlife areas which is the best thing to do. In the areas like CKGR, Makgadikgadi, Khutse, Kalahari, Savuti, Chobe River front, Khwai and Moremi Game Reserve. You definitely need more days because these areas are the most active wildlife areas and they are all very large areas to cover in a day. This can be overwhelming and tiring. With lots of cat activities in some of the areas mentioned above, you need more time to be lucky with actions. This is why with our mobile safaris, we recommend staying in one or two areas only for your stay to truest enjoy what you’ve come to see.
Book your trip with a local agency or tour operator:
This is the easiest way to book your Safari trip because Local operators, Travel agents, and Nature Guides know the area better and some experienced Nature Guides will know more about the animal movement and active wildlife areas in different Reserves/National Parks. With you having an open discussion with your local operator or agent, you can specify your interests and what you’re wanting to see most. With this information, they can then put forward a suggested itinerary looking at your special interests and the intention of your trip. This itinerary will contain how many days you need in each area along with the different travel times and distances when you change from one area to the next.

What it’s like to travel with local guides and safari companies:
This is the best way for the first travelers to travel about the country because you don’t worry about finding your way. The trained nature guides will be there every step of the way to help you with your needs and animal sightings. It is also easy because the company will be responsible to draw the itinerary for you and also looking at your specific special interests. This gives you a definite look at what you will be doing on your trip. Traveling with a local company also eases the stress of setting up camp as they have hired a team to do so, you don’t have to stress about getting lost as you will be escorted from one destination to the next and you never have to worry about what’s for dinner with trained cooks preparing all your meals on an open flame. You’re only responsibility is to relax and enjoy.
The more days in one area the better:
It is simply to explore more of each area so you can see more wildlife and its unique different landscape. The smallest Reserve or Park we have in Botswana is more than 5000 square kilometers and you can not cover half of this in a day, you don’t need to cover the whole Park but at least cover most of the wildlife active areas to maximize the chances of seeing most of the area animals. Doing 1 full day in the Park or Game Reserve might be not enough because different animals cover different areas on different days. Remember, we all don’t have a wildlife movement schedule but if you do 2 or more days, you will surely catch up with a few different species of animals as you explore more of their territory or home range. This is also good for the repeating traveler as they will know the best company to book with as well as the best areas to visit.
Try to explore more of the local restaurants for the local flavor because they have some of the best local flavors which will be totally different from country to country in Africa. Botswana has most of the very unique and tasty local food in Africa and it is worth having a variety of flavors while visiting the country.
Craft, grocery, and gift shops:
Botswana has a variety of shops for both foods, clothes, and beverages. So don’t worry to bring your whole country into Botswana. You just need to know that most of the shops are closed on Sundays and some half day on Saturday but they are all open for the whole day from Monday to Friday including all the government offices.
